STATE CORRECTIONAL POLICE OFFICER SLASHED AND STABBED BY INMATE TRENTON (12/13/23)— A State Correctional Police Officer was violently attacked Wednesday afternoon at the hands of an inmate in New Jersey State Prison. While assisting with a routine escort through the facility, the Officer placed handcuffs on the inmate from outside the cell as he called for the door to be opened. The inmate then charged out of the cell, swinging his clenched hands over his head as he slashed and stabbed at the Officer’s face and neck. The Officer quickly tackled the inmate to the floor to regain compliance until finally securing him with a restraining belt as back-up arrived at the scene. Staff immediately escorted the Officer away to receive medical treatment for visible lacerations to his nose and neck—mere inches from his major arteries. “Vicious assaults on our Correctional Police Officers are far too common and inmates will use anything they possibly can as a weapon, even their own handcuffs,” said William Sullivan, President of the New Jersey State Policemen’s Benevolent Association Local 105. “While we’re relieved to know this Officer will make a full recovery, the lingering concern for what could happen keeps us all up at night. It is unacceptable. We call on the Special Investigations Division to conduct a thorough investigation and criminally charge the incarcerated person with attempted murder.”
